Big Hearts, Small Hands: How BBMA Students Are Making a World of Difference

Here at Big Blue Marble Academy, we believe that even the smallest hands can make a big impact. This belief was beautifully demonstrated in our recent “Change for Change” initiative, where our young learners came together to support mothers and their babies halfway across the world at Rotifunk Hospital in Sierra Leone.

Over March and April, the children embarked on a mission to collect spare change, learning about the essentials of pre- and postnatal care. Their efforts were not just about fundraising; they were about making a connection. Our students created posters, engaged with the community, and even counted and rolled coins themselves. They learned the value of every cent and the difference it could make in providing healthy food, clean water, and medical care to new mothers and their babies.

Through their dedicated efforts, our students raised over $12,600, directly benefiting 140 new families. This accomplishment is about more than just numbers. Each coin collected represented a beacon of hope and health for a mother and child far away.

Our curriculum at BBMA is designed to not only educate but to inspire. In April, while focusing on Kenya, our students explored African languages, wildlife, and stories, enriching their understanding of a diverse world. The “Change for Change” project complemented these lessons, turning knowledge into action and empathy into service.

Donna Whittaker, our Vice President of Curriculum and Education, reflects on this project with pride: “At BBMA, we do more than introduce our children to the wide world. We show them how they can be active, caring participants in it. This project is a testament to their incredible capacity to care and contribute.”

The journey doesn’t stop here. As our students continue to engage with new cultures and communities through our global curriculum, they carry with them the lessons learned from their efforts. They see firsthand that no matter how small, they can be a part of something big.

This initiative is a bright example of how BBMA nurtures not only the minds but the hearts of our students, empowering them to make a positive impact from our local communities to the global stage.
