Passport to Community

Nurturing Little Minds and Growing Big Hearts

A signature component of our curriculum is Passport to Community, which supports your child as they become a caring, compassionate member of their classroom, school, and broader community. Through character education, mindfulness, and age-appropriate service-learning experiences called “Heart Projects,” we build your child’s understanding of belonging, empathy, and responsibility.

Mindfulness: Learning to be kind, calm, and connected

At any age, your child can benefit from learning mindfulness. That’s why each month, we focus on a new character trait for your child to explore. We talk with your child about their feelings, others’ feelings, and how their actions affect those around them. We address concepts such as respect, responsibility, collaboration, compassion, gratitude, joyfulness, patience, persistence, initiative, generosity, and helpfulness. This focus helps to give your child a broader awareness of themselves and others, and a greater ability to navigate the world.

Heart Projects: The Power of Making a Difference Through Service Learning

Our service-learning projects help your child understand the impact of being a caring, capable member of the community. These Heart Projects range from raising money for new moms and babies and providing blankets for those less fortunate, to running lemonade stands for children with cancer. Through these guided projects, BBMA students learn empathy, leadership, collaboration, responsibility, and an awareness of how to help their community, as well as practical skills like creating and designing materials for promotion, sorting and counting change and donations, and more.

In 2025, our students and families raised over $220,000 for local and global causes. Over the past 5 years, our students and families have contributed over $1.5 million, proving that even young children can change the world.

  • Blankets of Love

    January

At BBMA, your child will help to create no-sew blankets for children in need. In 2026, our students made 850 Blankets of Love, which were donated to orphanages, shelters, children’s hospitals, and partner organizations supporting vulnerable children.

  • Change for a Change

    March-April

Your child will love supporting moms and babies across the world at Rotifunk Hospital in Sierra Leone through Mission of Hope’s Madonna Project. In 2026, our students raised $17,213 by making posters, counting donations, rolling coins, and creating cards. Combined with proceeds from school photos totaling $59,532, BBMA students supported 767 new mothers and their babies.

  • Alex’s Lemonade Stand

    June-July

Your child will help prepare delicious lemonade, greet customers, decorate lemonade stands, and count funds. While participating in these learning activities, your child will support childhood cancer research through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. In 2025, our students and families raised $43,464 for research into new treatments and cures.

  • Popcorn for a Purpose

    September

Through our Popcorn for a Purpose fundraiser, your child will learn new skills and purpose while raising funds to help less fortunate children. In 2025, our students sold almost $80,000 worth of popcorn to support the operational expenses and essential supplies for an orphanage with Global Children’s Outreach.

  • Season of Giving

    October-December

Over the holiday season, your child will collaborate on various community-based giving projects to send gift-filled packages to children in need. Funds and supplies raised from earlier Heart Projects help ensure that children in need receive gifts and essential items at a meaningful time of year while teaching your child the importance of generosity, gratitude, and compassion.
